“Pastorale” will open on the 18th of May 2024 in Teramo.
The project presents the digital reworking of a frame of the Disney film “Fantasia” (1940), extracted from the segment dedicated to the Symphony n. 6 in F major op. 68 by Ludwig van Beethoven, commonly known as Pastorale.
The whole scene is dedicated to a day in the realm of the Greek gods, set in the woods at the foot of Mount Olympus, and the frame chosen by the artist is taken from the episode in which the centaurs, Fauns and nymphs welcome drunk Dionysus on a donkey during a festive ritual of preparation of the new wine. Sgambaro intervenes on the frame erasing the characters, transforming a cheerful and animated place in a dark and desolate landscape. The ancestral scene, now static and deserted, reflects for the artist the condition of isolation mixed immobility typical of the Italian rural province, depopulated by its inhabitants, tuned to the past and therefore foreign to the languages and feelings of the contemporary world.
Sgambaro’s intervention consists of an installation and a performative moment: the windows of the space host the image of the bucolic landscape emptied, while inside an orchestra performs the same piece of Beethoven’s Pastorale that plays during the animated sequence.
