"Don’t Sleep" brings together questions surrounding the inhabitation of urban space, the anxieties produced by systems of order and social security, and the childlike fear of darkness. Two “ox-eyes,” projected onto the ground on either side of Corso del Popolo in Padua, evoke an imagery associated with entertainment and theatrical illusion. Transplanted into the urban environment, these familiar forms take on unexpected directions, generating a disorienting monologue addressed to the city itself. The two silhouettes used for the projections are connected to the public lighting system, following its predetermined on/off cycle. Their appearance and disappearance are thus governed by an external rhythm, turning the infrastructure that regulates urban visibility into an ambiguous presence, suspended between reassurance and unease.
